Grants for replacing your windows
Yes, they exist. No, I am not going to promise you a figure. Energy efficiency grants change by year, by region and by your particular situation, and your gestor files them, not me. What I can explain is how the system works and what will be asked of me.
Why windows qualify at all
Almost all public help available for windows is not help “for windows”. It is help for improving the energy efficiency of a home. Windows qualify because, along with the facade and the roof, they are where most energy is lost.
That has one important practical consequence: what usually gets assessed is not that the window is new, but how much energy demand it removes. Which is why the technical documentation for the system matters so much.
The kinds of help that tend to exist
- Income tax deductions for work that improves a home's energy efficiency. Applied in your tax return, not paid up front.
- Housing renovation programmes, with application windows that open and close on fixed dates and with limited budgets.
- Regional and municipal grants, which have existed at various times in the Comunidad Valenciana and in some town halls.
- Programmes for building communities, where the work covers the whole building rather than a single flat.
All of this changes. A programme that was open last year may be closed today, and the other way round. Before counting on any grant, confirm with your gestor what is currently live for your case and your municipality.
What will be asked of me
This is the part I am actually involved in. Almost every programme requires documentation that has to come from the installer:
- A detailed quote, specifying the system, the measurements and the glazing
- An itemised invoice on completion
- Technical characteristics of the installed system, usually the thermal transmittance
- Before and after photographs, on some programmes
I provide all of it without you having to chase me. If your gestor needs something in a particular format, they can tell me and that is how I will send it.
One piece of advice about sequence
Talk to your gestor before commissioning the work, not after. A fair number of grants require the application to precede the start of works, and it is a shame to lose one over the order of the steps.
And do not let a grant choose the system for you. It works out better to pick the window that suits your home and then see which grant fits, rather than the reverse.
